Don’t Worry – Be Happy
Day Four – January 9, 2020
Can you imagine, Bobby McFerrin’s song will be thirty years old this year! And it still irritates me. How can you simply think your way out of worry and think your way into happiness? It’s impossible, right? I think this idea is wrong at so many levels. But then you read this from the Bible.
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6
So what’s the difference between the song and this verse? Well, they both start with the same words, “Don’t worry.” But after that, there is a huge difference. All Bobby McFerrin can give you is something that depends on you, on how you make yourself feel. The Bible gives us a process for dealing with worry and anxiety. As we move through the process, God brings healing to our emotions and brings answers to our prayers. Don’t Worry, Be Happy puts everything on us. The Bible teaches us how to put everything on God. Let’s take this apart.
What is worry? Worry is simply focusing on my fears instead of focusing on God. Worry is bad thinking. Read what the Apostle Paul teaches us out of the Book of Romans.
“Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever].” Romans 8:6 (AMP)
Worry brings death, but a spiritual mind brings life and peace. It doesn’t mean that the problems don’t exist. It means that we hand our problems over to God and start trusting Him with them. In my life, I have discovered that there is only one way I can do this, and that is through prayer and fasting. I am too emotional to be able to simply think my worries away. I need a mind shift that only comes from the Holy Spirit. All throughout Scripture we read of this approach to worry. Look at how two of the most famous prophets in history dealt with worry.
This was Daniel’s response to hearing that Israel would be in captivity for seventy years. “So I turned to the LORD God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting…” Daniel 9:3
This is how Ezra dealt with worry when concerned that he and his fellow Israelites would be murdered. “So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer.” Ezra 8:23
Are you worried? Is something out of your control that is causing fear? Take this time during twenty-one days of prayer and fasting to do just that…pray and fast. Go through the process of handing your out-of-control circumstance and your fear and worry over to God. In the middle of the mess, you will find peace that only comes from God.
