The dream to plant a church in Leesburg, Virginia became a reality when Greg Wigfield, his wife Pam and five other couples launched Destiny Church. That was on October 31, 1999. Forty-two people attended the first service, and the dream was born. Today, Destiny is a thriving congregation of people committed to reach others who are spiritually disconnected and turning them into followers of Christ.
Who started it all?
Greg and Pam Wigfield along with five other couples launched Destiny in October of 1999. The first service had 42 attendees...over half of them were children.
What were they thinking?
The dream was to start a church that would attract people who did not attend church. We did not want to grow by way of transferees from other churches; we wanted to reach the unchurched and the unchallenged people of the Leesburg area.
When did Destiny Church open its doors?
Halloween weekend of 1999.
Why do we do what we do they way we do it?
Many people ask us why we don’t do church the way they are used to doing church. The answer is simple. Most people don’t go to church in the American culture, so we decided to do church different in order to try to reach those people. Environment is important to us. Any Sunday you come into Destiny’s auditorium, you will notice that we are working hard to relate to people who do not attend church. You won’t make mistakes. You won’t stand up at the wrong times, or pick up the wrong book, or say the wrong things because we don’t do things that confuse people.
What will I find at Destiny Church?
The very first thing we’ll ask of you is simple: relax. You’re with friends. Even if you’ve never been in church before, you’ll have no worries about being flagged as a “newbie.” Or finding yourself “volunteered” to make seven dozen cookies for the first grade class.
What you will find is this:
* a casual atmosphere
* friendly people who’ll help you find your way around
* today’s music and high-impact media presentations
* messages relevant to your daily life
* an amazing children’s space
* that you matter to God—and Destiny Church
Whether you’re single, married, single again, with or without children – no matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done – we invite you to experience the difference here.
